What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is about being present in the moment, moment to moment, maintaining an awareness of our thoughts and feelings, noticing how they change, without judging them.
Meditation is a practice that deliberately trains our attention, so that we can wake up from habits of thinking and being and experience things as they are.
There have been many years of research on mindfulness training and research is growing in this field. In summary research has found it can be effective for reducing stress, anxiety and depression and can improve physical health too including for those with chronic pain (APA, 2019).
Please note: It is important to know that whilst mindfulness meditation can be beneficial in many ways it is not a substitute for therapy. If you are seeing a therapist or have any concerns about mental health issues, please consult a therapist prior to practicing meditation.
Mindfulness on Country
In the following video, Dana is on Dupang, her traditional homelands on the Country (Ruwe) of the Ngarrindjeri Nation, on the beautiful Coorong. Whilst this has a focus on working with children and young people, particularly for those who may have lost their connections, the invitation is for all to explore mindfulness in the natural world, wherever you are. If you choose to explore this yourself or/and with children and young people, explore with curiosity and gentleness and be ‘mindful’ of your surroundings, including where you choose to step and be bare foot.
Dana acknowledges the ancient practices and wisdom that have guided her presentation.
